Advanced Ceramics and Powder Metallurgy

Research on ceramics and ceramic composites started in 1988. The work was gradually organised within three main areas: Synthesis and processing of ceramic materials and their composites, functional properties of ceramic materials, and modelling of processing and behaviour of ceramics.

Emphasis within these three areas has evolved over the years. Themes which have received a lot of attention recently include : powder coating, electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of components and coatings, modelling of the EPD process, laminated and functionally graded (FGM) ceramic or cermet composites for structural, tribological and biomedical applications, electrically conductive composites for shaping by electrical-discharge machining (EDM), damping and elastic properties of materials at room and elevated temperature (Impulse Excitation Technique, IET), chemical compatibility testing, microwave sintering, Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS), Pulsed Electric Current Sintering (PECS) or Field Assisted Sintering (FAST), Development of ceramic nanocomposites, bioceramics and biomaterials.
