Welcome from the Chair
I would like to welcome you to the Department of Materials Engineering (MTM). Within the Faculty of Engineering MTM is responsible for education, research and services in the field of materials.
The Department MTM provides the educational programs such as the Dutch Bachelor and Master program in Materials Engineering and the English Master of Materials Engineering. Every year around 30 students graduate as Masters in Materials Engineering. The lecturers of MTM also teach courses in other faculties and are involved in the organization of other master educations as the Master of Biomedical Technology and the Master of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. On our website you will find comprehensive information on the overall educational program of MTM. Another important mission of our professors is the guidance of doctoral students and the care of the doctoral education program. These activities are closely linked with the research in MTM.
The research activities are organized into three research units SCALINT (Structural Composites and Alloys, Integrity and Non-destructive Testing), SIEM (Surface and Interface Engineered Materials), and SeMPeR (Sustainable Metals Processing and Recycling).
The new materials and material production and material transformation processes that we develop in the department contribute to the technologies and applications of tomorrow. Examples include work on new and improved recycling concepts and processes, biodegradable composites, new alloys to replace lead-containing components, materials for lithium batteries, sensors based on functional materials, bone scaffolds, ceramic gradient materials, ultra strong steels, ...
The research activities of the Department MTM are funded by the University, the Flemish, Belgian and European governments, as well as numerous industrial partners. Based on a framework agreement with Umicore, Bekaert and OCAS, MTM spins out part of her research with these companies and helps strategically positioning them.
To achieve all this, MTM has a staff of nearly 200 employees. The deployment of these co-workers makes numerous technical achievements and important research results on an international level possible. We are proud to inform you about this on our website.prof. dr. ir. Martine Wevers
